Quantum multicriticality of bilayer graphene in the presence of a tunable energy gap

Abstract

We develop a theory for quantum phases and quantum multicriticality in bilayer graphene in the presence of an explicit energy gap in the non-interacting spectrum by extending previous renormalization group (RG) analyses of electron-electron interactions in gapless bilayer graphene at finite temperature to include the effect of an electric field applied perpendicular to the sample. We determine the possible outcomes of the resulting RG equations, represented by "fixed rays" along which ratios of the coupling constants remain constant and map out the leading instabilities of the system for an interaction of the form of a Coulomb interaction that is screened by two parallel conducting plates placed equidistant from the electron. We find that some of the fixed rays on the "target plane" found in the zero-field case are no longer valid fixed rays, but that all four of the isolated rays are still valid. We also find five additional fixed rays that are not present in the zero-field case. We then construct maps of the leading instability (or instabilities) of the system for the screened Coulomb-like interaction as a function of the overall interaction strength and interaction range for four values of the applied electric field. We find that the pattern of leading instabilities is the same as that found in the zero-field case, namely that the system is unstable to a layer antiferromagnetic state for short-ranged interactions, to a nematic state for long-ranged interactions, and to both for intermediate-ranged interactions. However, if the interaction becomes too long-ranged or too weak, then the system will exhibit no instabilities. The ranges at which the nematic instability first appears, the antiferromagnetic instability disappears, and the nematic instability disappears all decrease with increasing applied electric field.

Kondo Lattice model for field induced triplet pairing in CeRh$_2$As$_2$

Spin triplet superconductors are of interest because of their topological properties, and their robustness to high magnetic fields. CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a unique heavy fermion superconductor with both even-parity and candidate odd-parity superconducting phases with a special feature enabling a field induced phase transition between the two. The field induced transition which switches the parity of the Cooper pairs is enabled by a staggered antisymmetric spin orbit coupling (ASOC) interaction. However, the heavy fermion origins of the superconductivity in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ and the origin of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling are currently unexplored. Here, we develop a Kondo lattice model for CeRh$_2$As$_2$ and demonstrate how local hybridization between Cerium $d$- and $f$-orbitals, driven by the locally broken inversion symmetry, at the Cerium sites generates the ASOC. The resulting Kondo lattice model leads to nearly degenerate even and odd parity superconducting states that display a field induced parity transition between an even-parity state and an odd-parity pseudospin triplet state. We discuss the wider implications of our results extended to other heavy fermion systems like CeSiI.

Chiral magnetic excitations in the RMn6Sn6 kagome metals (R=Tb, Ho, Er, and Y)

Recent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations of the kagome metal TbMn6Sn6 reveal novel chiral magnetic excitations associated with the kagome layer. These excitations appear to have an itinerant character with a large energy scale (> 100 meV) and heavy damping; however, the origin of these excitations, which are not predicted by local moment linear spin-wave theory, is not understood. Here, we use INS to show that chiral excitations are also found in RMn6Sn6 compounds with R=Tb, Ho, Er, and Y having uniaxial, tilted, planar ferrimagnet, and planar double-spiral magnetic structures, respectively. Thus, the chiral excitations exist regardless of the magnetic structure. Additionally, R=Er and Y demonstrate that the chiral mode intensity is weaker in planar magnetic structures, suggesting that excitations are transverse to the local Mn moment direction. The chiral excitations appear only at L=odd positions in the Brilloun zone, and correspond to chiral spin exciations of the same handedness within each kagome layer, and pi out-of-phase between layers.

Finite-temperature spectral functions of lattice polarons with process tensors

We develop a process tensor approach for calculating the finite-temperature spectral functions of lattice polarons. We show that the finite-temperature phonon influence functional can be expressed as the elementwise exponential of a low-rank matrix product state, enabling an efficient summation of electron worldlines. An embedding construction embeds worldlines of different propagation times into a single matrix product state. This construction yields the propagator over the full simulated time interval in a single calculation. We benchmark this approach against available finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization group results for the one-dimensional Holstein polaron. We further obtain numerically converged spectra for the two-dimensional Holstein polaron. The spectra reveal a progressive transfer of spectral weight from coherent spectral features into an incoherent background with increasing temperature.
