Floquet edge states in a harmonically driven integer quantum Hall system

Abstract

Recent theoretical work on time-periodically kicked Hofstadter model found robust counter-propagating edge modes. It remains unclear how ubiquitously such anomalous modes can appear, and what dictates their robustness against disorder. Here we shed further light on the nature of these modes by analyzing a simple type of periodic driving where the hopping along one spatial direction is modulated sinusoidally with time while the hopping along the other spatial direction is kept constant. We obtain the phase diagram for the quasienergy spectrum at flux 1/3 as the driving frequency $ω$ and the hopping anisotropy are varied. A series of topologically distinct phases with counter-propagating edge modes appear due to the harmonic driving, similar to the case of a periodically kicked system studied earlier. We analyze the time dependence of the pair of Floquet edge states localized at the same edge, and compare their Fourier components in the frequency domain. In the limit of small modulation, one of the Floquet edge mode within the pair can be viewed as the edge mode originally living in the other energy gap shifted in quasienergy by $\hbar ω$, i.e., by absorption or emission of a "photon" of frequency $ω$. Our result suggests that counter-propagating Floquet edge modes are generic features of periodically driven integer quantum Hall systems, and not tied to any particular driving protocol. It also suggests that the Floquet edge modes would remain robust to any static perturbations that do not destroy the chiral edge modes of static quantum Hall states.

Sound Wave in the Backreaction Affected Spacetime in Analogue Gravity Based on Number-Conserving Approach

Adopting a number-conserving approach, we show that the sound wave in the backreaction-affected dynamical spacetime obeys the equations of motion for a massive scalar field in an analogue spacetime. Even with backreaction, the analogue metric has the same form as that without backreaction, except that the sound velocity, fluid density, and fluid velocity incorporate small corrections that account for backreaction. Moreover, the modification of the classical fluid-dynamical equations by backreaction introduces a spacetime-dependent mass. We also present a linear form of the modified Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation with number conservation, which allows us to solve it numerically. Using a finite-size homogeneous quasi-one-dimensional Bose gas as an example, we find that backreaction enhances the canonically normal-ordered correlation function at the same point, by about $10\%$ in the bulk and up to about $20\%$ near the edges. The bulk enhancement persists when the finite imaging resolution of cold-atom experiments is taken into account.

Skin phase transition of a skyrmion in a ferromagnetic superfluid

Compared with a scalar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a spinor BEC supports richer phenomena because of its internal spin degrees of freedom, including topological solitons such as domain walls or skyrmions. Here, we theoretically reveal three distinct axisymmetric soliton structures formed as a circular domain wall in a spin-1 BEC, connected within fixed winding numbers. We refer to these structures as the broken-axisymmetry (BA)-skin, antiferromagnetic (AF)-skin and normal-core phases. Their occurrence is controlled by the two dimensionless parameters in the absence of linear Zeeman coefficient $p=0$: $q/μ$, the ratio of the quadratic Zeeman coefficient to the chemical potential, and $c_s/c_n$, the ratio of spin interaction to the density interaction. The BA-skin and AF-skin phases exhibit local easy-plane magnetic order and local easy-plane spin-nematic order, respectively, while the normal-core phase is similar to a doubly quantized vortex analogous to that of a scalar BEC with a density depletion at the center. We obtain semi-analytical estimates of selected transition boundaries separating these phases by analyzing the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and also numerically confirm them by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We estimate the skyrmion radius using a hydrostatic approximation and compare the result with numerical solutions. We envision our results on skyrmions in a spin-1 BEC can trigger further investigation on novel soliton structures in a magnetic superfluid.

Phases of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a hard-wall potential

We investigate the rotational properties of a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensed gas, which is confined in a hard-wall potential. For weak interactions the gas carries its angular momentum via vortices of multiple quantization. As the coupling increases and for sufficiently slow rotational frequencies of the trap, the multiply-quantized vortex states become unstable against a mixed state. For stronger couplings, as the angular frequency of the trap increases, there is a transition from a vortex lattice, to a vortex lattice with a hole at the trap center, and finally to a giant vortex. For weak effective attractive interactions we still have vortices of multiple quantization. These states become unstable towards states which break the axial symmetry of the problem and resemble center-of-mass excitation, as the coupling becomes more negative. Finally, for even more attractive forces, the system becomes unstable against collapse.
