Antiferromagnetic ground state with pair-checkboard order in FeSe

Abstract

Monolayer FeSe thin film grown on SrTiO_{3}(001) (STO) shows the sign of T_{c}> 77 K, which is higher than the T_{c}-record of 56 K for the bulk FeAs-based superconductors. However, little is known about the magnetic ground state of FeSe, which should be closely related to its unusual superconductivity. Previous studies presume the collinear stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as the ground state of FeSe, same to that in FeAs superconductors. Here we find a novel magnetic order named "pair-checkboard AFM" as the magnetic ground state of tetragonal FeSe. The novel pair-checkboard order results from the interplay between the nearest, the next-nearest and the unnegligible next-next-nearest neighbor magnetic exchange couplings of Fe atoms. The monolayer FeSe in pair-checkbord order shows an unexpected insulating behavior with a Dirac-cone-like band structure related to the specific orbital order of d_{xz} and d_{yz} characters of Fe atoms, which could explain recently observed insulator-superconductor transition. The present results cast new insights on the magnetic ordering in FeSe monolayer and its derived superconductors.

Experimental signature of transient symmetry breaking in a cavity superconductor

Transient states of matter far from equilibrium may exhibit physical properties beyond those allowed by the equilibrium-state crystalline symmetries. We explore ultrafast and direct electronic excitations of transient states in a cavity superconductor by using time-resolved terahertz-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. Our results show that the strong terahertz field can transiently modify the symmetries of the electronic subsystems via the injection of a transient supercurrent, leading to high-order nonlinear dynamical responses that are not compatible with the equilibrium-state symmetries, which evidences for transient symmetry breaking on the picosecond time scale. Our study also finds that the strong coupling of the superconductor to the designed microcavities enables the sensitive detection of the nonlinear responses associated to the transient symmetry breaking.

Pressure-induced Lifshitz and quantum phase transitions in electron-doped cuprate superconductor

We report the first observations of a pressure-induced Lifshitz transition coupled with a quantum phase transition in electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr0.87LaCe0.13CuO4 (PLCCO), by combining high-pressure electrical resistance, Hall coefficient and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements at low temperatures. Our low-temperature Hall coefficient measurements reveal that the Hall coefficient decreases continuously and reaches zero at about 10 GPa (critical pressure of Pc1). Upon further compression beyond Pc1, Hall coefficient unexpectedly changes its sign from negative to positive, signaling a reconstruction of the Fermi surface from electron-dominated to hole-dominated topology. Concurrently, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits a monotonic suppression, vanishing completely at 17.6 GPa (critical pressure of Pc2), where the system enters a non-superconducting metallic state. Our low temperature XRD measurements unequivocally demonstrate the absence of any structural phase transition across Pc1 and Pc2. Therefore, the sign change in RH at Pc1 is associated with a Lifshitz transition, which is never found in the compressed bulk electron- or hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Moreover, the quantum phase transition observed at Pc2 contrasts sharply with known high-pressure behavior of hole-doped cuprates, uncovering a fundamental difference on how pressure tunes the ground states of electron- versus hole-doped systems. These findings provide crucial insights into the different pressure responses on the interplay among Fermi surface topology, electronic correlations, and superconductivity between these two kinds of cuprate superconductors.

Superconductivity in a Two-Orbital Hatsugai-Kohmoto Model at Half Filling

Multiband superconductivity gives rise to a rich landscape of possible pairing states. Here we study superconductivity emerging from a half-filled normal state in a two-orbital extension of the Hatsugai-Kohmoto model, an exactly solvable model of correlated electrons with momentum-local interactions, which provides a minimal framework to explore the interplay of strong correlations, orbital structure and pairing symmetry. For a system with point-group symmetry $\rm D_{4h}$, we classify the symmetry-allowed superconducting gap structures, taking into account spin, orbital and momentum degrees of freedom. We further compute the critical temperature and the superconducting order parameter for selected pairing channels as functions of interaction and pairing strength within a mean-field treatment. Our results provide a systematic framework for analyzing superconductivity in the orbital Hatsugai-Kohmoto model and extend symmetry-based approaches to correlated multiband settings.
