Algebraic reconstruction of piecewise-smooth functions from integral measurements

Abstract

This paper presents some results on a well-known problem in Algebraic Signal Sampling and in other areas of applied mathematics: reconstruction of piecewise-smooth functions from their integral measurements (like moments, Fourier coefficients, Radon transform, etc.). Our results concern reconstruction (from the moments or Fourier coefficients) of signals in two specific classes: linear combinations of shifts of a given function, and "piecewise $D$-finite functions" which satisfy on each continuity interval a linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients. In each case the problem is reduced to a solution of a certain type of non-linear algebraic system of equations ("Prony-type system"). We recall some known methods for explicitly solving such systems in one variable, and provide extensions to some multi-dimensional cases. Finally, we investigate the local stability of solving the Prony-type systems.

Dimension-free estimates for the full discrete Euclidean ball maximal function

Let $M_t$ denote the normalized average over the lattice points in the Euclidean ball of radius $t$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We prove that the full maximal operator $f\mapsto\sup_{t\geq0}\lvert M_t f\rvert$ is bounded on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$, for every $1<p\leq\infty$, with a constant independent of the dimension. In particular, this resolves a question of E.M. Stein from the mid 1990s. The principal ingredient in our proof is that, when $t\lesssim d$ with $t$ sufficiently large, the associated multiplier $\mathfrak{m}_{\sqrt{\lfloor t^2\rfloor}}(ξ)$ admits an asymptotic expansion of arbitrary prescribed order, uniform in $ξ$, whose resulting maximal operators can be controlled by the discrete normalized Gaussian maximal function studied by Mirek--Szarek--Wróbel \cite{MSW25}.

Regular specular differentiation in Euclidean spaces

We study the regular specular derivative, a generalized derivative defined at every point where both one-sided derivatives exist and are finite. Geometrically, it is the slope of the mirror that reflects the left tangent ray into the right one. In one variable we derive computational formulas, prove inverse function and rotation rules, establish Quasi-Rolle's Theorem and the Quasi-Mean Value Theorem, and obtain a derivative-limit theorem, which shows that twice regularly specularly differentiable functions are continuously differentiable. We also prove both parts of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. In several variables we introduce specular gradients, directional derivatives, tangent hyperplanes, and normal vectors, show that a continuous specular gradient forces classical differentiability, and characterize when the specular tangent hyperplane is unique.
