Electromagnetic Casimir piston in higher dimensional spacetimes

Abstract

We consider the Casimir effect of the electromagnetic field in a higher dimensional spacetime of the form $M\times \mathcal{N}$, where $M$ is the 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime and $\mathcal{N}$ is an $n$-dimensional compact manifold. The Casimir force acting on a planar piston that can move freely inside a closed cylinder with the same cross section is investigated. Different combinations of perfectly conducting boundary conditions and infinitely permeable boundary conditions are imposed on the cylinder and the piston. It is verified that if the piston and the cylinder have the same boundary conditions, the piston is always going to be pulled towards the closer end of the cylinder. However, if the piston and the cylinder have different boundary conditions, the piston is always going to be pushed to the middle of the cylinder. By taking the limit where one end of the cylinder tends to infinity, one obtains the Casimir force acting between two parallel plates inside an infinitely long cylinder. The asymptotic behavior of this Casimir force in the high temperature regime and the low temperature regime are investigated for the case where the cross section of the cylinder in $M$ is large. It is found that if the separation between the plates is much smaller than the size of $\mathcal{N}$, the leading term of the Casimir force is the same as the Casimir force on a pair of large parallel plates in the $(4+n)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. However, if the size of $\mathcal{N}$ is much smaller than the separation between the plates, the leading term of the Casimir force is $1+h/2$ times the Casimir force on a pair of large parallel plates in the 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, where $h$ is the first Betti number of $\mathcal{N}$. In the limit the manifold $\mathcal{N}$ vanishes, one does not obtain the Casimir force in the 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime if $h$ is nonzero.

Differential Equations for Wilson Loops in ABJM Theory

We derive a system of differential equations which are satisfied by the vevs of BPS Wilson loops and 't Hooft coupling of ABJM theory. They are Picard-Fuchs equations of an algebraic curve defined by the derivative of the planar resolvent of the corresponding matrix model. The weak and strong coupling behaviors can be reproduced by their local solutions around regular singularities. We also obtain a recursion relation which can be used to determine the planar vevs of BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations.

Multipartite Entanglement Geometry in AdS/BCFT

Multipartite entanglement measures probe how quantum correlations are organized beyond what can be inferred from pairwise entropies. We study how this structure is reshaped by a physical boundary in a holographic BCFT. The end-of-the-world brane opens new relative-homology channels for multipartite entanglement, allowing connected bulk webs to reorganize and factorize at scales that need not coincide with any ordinary Ryu--Takayanagi transition. In static AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$, this produces a characteristic hierarchy of multipartite phases and a nontrivial dependence of genuine multi-entropy on the boundary. In the thermofield-double state, genuinely connected webs can instead be supported through the Einstein--Rosen bridge, leading to growth, reconnection and saturation scales distinct from the usual Hartman--Maldacena transitions. These results show that multipartite entanglement is sensitive not only to extremal-surface areas but also to how bulk entanglement structures are allowed to join, split and terminate in the presence of a boundary.

Gravity as Large Scale Structure: Families of CFTs and the Higher-Spin Gap

We observe an apparently universal behavior in large $N$ conformal field theory (CFT) in $d\geq 2$ dimensions: the single-trace, higher-spin gap obeys the parametric bound $Δ_{\rm gap} \lesssim (δc)^{1/d}$, where $δc$ is the central charge increment between successive theories. The origin of this bound is explained heuristically, using a generalized notion of branes that interpolate between conformal points in theory space. Seeking a more precise framework for this picture leads to the central concept of families of CFTs, which tacitly underlies various features and puzzles of AdS/CFT. We develop a working definition of families, with inspiration from families of $L$-functions in number theory, and formulate a family-level version of the gap bound. Interpreted holographically for families of AdS$_{d+1}$ vacua, this bound, when applicable, rules out Planckian scale separation, constrains the size and number of extra dimensions, and explains simple scaling patterns in string/M-theory. It also accounts for why all known large $N$ vector models have a bounded gap.
