Ideal Gas in a strong Gravitational field: Area dependence of Entropy

Abstract

We study the thermodynamic parameters like entropy, energy etc. of a box of gas made up of indistinguishable particles when the box is kept in various static background spacetimes having a horizon. We compute the thermodynamic variables using both statistical mechanics as well as by solving the hydrodynamical equations for the system. When the box is far away from the horizon, the entropy of the gas depends on the volume of the box except for small corrections due to background geometry. As the box is moved closer to the horizon with one (leading) edge of the box at about Planck length (L_p) away from the horizon, the entropy shows an area dependence rather than a volume dependence. More precisely, it depends on a small volume A*L_p/2 of the box, upto an order O(L_p/K)^2 where A is the transverse area of the box and K is the (proper) longitudinal size of the box related to the distance between leading and trailing edge in the vertical direction (i.e in the direction of the gravitational field). Thus the contribution to the entropy comes from only a fraction O(L_p/K) of the matter degrees of freedom and the rest are suppressed when the box approaches the horizon. Near the horizon all the thermodynamical quantities behave as though the box of gas has a volume A*L_p/2 and is kept in a Minkowski spacetime. These effects are: (i) purely kinematic in their origin and are independent of the spacetime curvature (in the sense that Rindler approximation of the metric near the horizon can reproduce the results) and (ii) observer dependent. When the equilibrium temperature of the gas is taken to be equal to the the horizon temperature, we get the familiar A/L_p^2 dependence in the expression for entropy. All these results hold in a D+1 dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime.

Demagnetizing KBR and New Ricci-flat Rotating Metric

We construct a new Ricci-flat metric by demagnetizing the recently reported Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson (KBR) solution. The metric is a deformation of the Kerr metric characterized by a parameter $B$, so that the asymptotic Kerr becomes a regular dome of spindle shape with north and south poles. Despite lacking an asymptotically-flat region, we find that the first law of black hole thermodynamics can be established. Some thermodynamic relations are identical to those of the Kerr black hole, as if the constant $B$ is absent. Our Ricci-flat rotating metric serves a neutral seed for a variety of inequivalent schemes of magnetizing the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes.

The efficiency gap of two-step forecasts for stochastic gravitational wave background searches

The stochastic gravitational-wave background is targeted by the millihertz observatories LISA, Taiji and TianQin, and its forecast precision rests on a Whittle approximation to the periodogram likelihood. The quoted scale is that of a joint fit a two-step forecast need not reach. We show that the residual risk of a two-step forecast lies in the estimator route rather than in the likelihood. At the exact Whittle form we separate the forecast error into a deterministic bias $\mathbf{b}$ and an efficiency gap $\mathbf{C}_b$, both in closed form. We find that this gap is governed by the span of the first-step nuisance fit. It decreases substantially as the span increases and vanishes when the first-step fit spans the entire band or when the response exhibits no within-bin structure. The gap does not arise as a cost of the prior. Across the LISA band the gap spans more than an order of magnitude, the amplitude and tilt inflation falling from about thirty and twenty to unity at a band-wide first step. A foreground from the released LDC2a population moves the mid-band gap by an order of magnitude. A two-step forecast should therefore report the span of its first-step fit with its intervals, since that span decides whether they sit at the Fisher scale or an order of magnitude above it.

Semiclassical Cosmological Constant in Anti-de Sitter and de Sitter Spacetimes

We investigate the semiclassical Einstein equation for a quantized scalar field in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) and de Sitter (dS) spacetimes. We first determine self-consistent configurations by fixing the bare cosmological constant to its geometric value, requiring the renormalized vacuum stress-energy tensor to vanish. In AdS, the resulting mass-curvature relations depend on the curvature coupling and boundary conditions; one formal Neumann root for minimal coupling is excluded by the admissible parameter range, whereas both Dirichlet and Neumann solutions are allowed for conformal coupling. In dS, we recover the known self-consistent solution for a minimally coupled massive field. We then evaluate the effective cosmological constant on prescribed backgrounds in four massless configurations. In each case, it takes the form \(Λ_{\mathrm{eff}}=A/\ell^2+B/\ell^4\). The competition between classical curvature and vacuum polarization produces a minimum and a zero in the minimally coupled AdS case, while the other configurations are monotonic. Finally, the formal continuation \(\ell\rightarrow i\ell\) fails to reproduce the directly calculated quantum coefficients: their AdS-to-dS ratios are \(29/61\) for minimal coupling and \(-1\) for conformal coupling. These results show that continuation of the curvature scale alone does not establish equivalence between the semiclassical vacuum contributions in AdS and dS.
