Band terminations in density functional theory

Abstract

The analysis of the terminating bands has been performed in the relativistic mean field framework. It was shown that nuclear magnetism provides an additional binding to the energies of the specific configuration and this additional binding increases with spin and has its {\it maximum} exactly at the terminating state. This suggests that the terminating states can be an interesting probe of the time-odd mean fields {\it provided that other effects can be reliably isolated.} Unfortunately, a reliable isolation of these effects is not that simple: many terms of the density functional theories contribute into the energies of the terminating states and the deficiencies in the description of those terms affect the result. The recent suggestion \cite{ZSW.05} that the relative energies of the terminating states in the $N \neq Z, A\sim 44$ mass region given by $ΔE$ {\it provide unique and reliable constraints on time-odd mean fields and the strength of spin-orbit interaction} in density functional theories has been reanalyzed. The current investigation shows that the $ΔE$ value is affected also by the relative placement of the states with different orbital angular momentum ${\it l}$, namely, the placement of the $d$ (${\it l}=2$) and $f$ (${\it l}=3$) states. This indicates the dependence of the $ΔE$ value on the properties of the central potential.

Pfaffian and minor formulas in number-conserved pairing theory

In this work, I present closed-form formulas for the norm and many-body density matrices between wave functions with exact particle numbers in pairing theory. The expressions, written as sums of Pfaffians and minors, apply to both even and odd particle-number systems and to pair condensates as well as broken-pair configurations. This formalism facilitates calculations using the generator coordinate method and symmetry restoration techniques, such as angular momentum projection. I apply these formulas to $^{70}$Ge and $^{69}$Ge using the angular-momentum-projected number-conserved BCS theory. The calculations describe low-lying collective bands and provide an interpretation of their intrinsic structures.

An exact time-dependent generator coordinate method with projection for spontaneous fission reactions

Microscopic descriptions of fission dynamics through the barrier rely on different theoretical frameworks depending on the fission regime, with the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) commonly used for induced fission and semiclassical approaches such as the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method widely employed for spontaneous fission. In this work, we develop a fully microscopic approach to spontaneous fission based on an exact formulation of the TDGCM, avoiding both the Gaussian overlap approximation and semiclassical treatments. By combining the exact TDGCM with new projection tools and a quasistatic description of spontaneous fission, we derive spontaneous fission half-lives from a one-dimensional potential energy surface. A detailed analysis of the model parameters shows that they do not introduce uncontrolled phenomenological effects. Remaining discrepancies with experimental half-lives are related to possible limitations of the underlying microscopic interaction and to the choice of basis states in the generator coordinate method. The new framework provides a microscopic description of spontaneous fission with reduced empirical input and offers a pathway toward improved predictions through future developments of nuclear interactions, collective coordinates, and the handling of many-body dynamics.

Heavy-quark thermalization in the quark-gluon plasma via a fractional Langevin equation

The dynamics of heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma is commonly described within a standard Langevin equation framework. In this work, we extend the conventional framework by using a fractional Langevin equation based on the Caputo derivative of order $α$ with $1<α\leq 2$. We solve the fractional Langevin equation and derive the corresponding {\textit {fractional fluctuation-dissipation theorem}} for the heavy quark thermalization in the quark-gluon plasma medium. We calculate the time evolution of the mean-squared momentum, mean-squared displacement, momentum distribution, energy loss, longitudinal momentum loss, transverse momentum broadening, and the nuclear suppression factor of the heavy quarks. The mean-squared momentum thermalizes to the same value for all $α$ at late times, in agreement with the fractional fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and the nuclear suppression factor shows a systematic $α$-dependence. The energy loss of an energetic heavy quark grows strongly with $α$. The time evolution of the heavy quark momentum distribution provides additional sensitivity to the fractional dynamics of the heavy quarks in the QGP medium.
