Search for $η$-mesic nuclei in recoil-free transfer reaction

Abstract

We have studied the reaction $p+{^{27}Al}\to {^3{He}}+p+π^-+X$ at recoil-free kinematics. An $η$ meson possibly produced in this reaction would be thus almost at rest in the laboratory system and could therefore be bound with high probability, if nuclear $η$ states exist. The decay of such a state through the $N^*(1535)$ resonance would lead to a proton-$π^-$ pair emitted in opposite directions. For these conditions we find some indication of such a bound state. An upper limit of $\approx$ 0.5 nb is found.

First measurement of kaonic deuterium X-ray transitions

The study of the strong interaction among hadrons at low energies remains one of the key challenges in fundamental physics because of its non-perturbative nature, which makes theoretical descriptions strongly dependent on experimental input. Although substantial progress has been made for systems involving up and down quarks, theoretical models in the strangeness sector continue to face limitations due to the lack of experimental data. Kaonic atoms provide a powerful tool to study the low-energy strong interaction with strangeness through the energy shifts and widths induced on their lowest atomic levels. In this context, kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has long represented one of the major open challenges in hadronic-atom physics because of its extremely low X-ray yield. This measurement is particularly important because it gives access to the poorly constrained $K^-n$ interaction at threshold. Here, we report the first observation of kaonic deuterium X-ray transitions, performed with the SIDDHARTA-2 experiment at the DA$Φ$NE collider. We determine the strong-interaction shift and width of the $1s$ level to be $\varepsilon_{1s}=-810.9\pm24.5\,(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.1\,(\mathrm{syst})\,\mathrm{eV}$ and $Γ_{1s}=812\pm97\,(\mathrm{stat})\pm33\,(\mathrm{syst})\,\mathrm{eV}$, respectively. This measurement constitutes the most precise experimental determination of the $K^-d$ strong interaction at threshold and allows discrimination among competing theoretical models. Combined with the kaonic hydrogen measurement, this result provides the experimental input required to determine the isospin-dependent $K^-N$ scattering lengths, with implications for the description of the nature of the molecular interpretation of the $Λ(1405)$, and neutron-rich matter.

Short-range correlated pair formation and nuclear shell structure

Short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs, caused by brief, high-momentum interactions between two nucleons, are dominated by neutron-proton pairs with large relative and smaller center-of-mass momenta. However, which nucleons form pairs is not fully understood. Measurements of 40,48Ca and 54Fe showed that intra-shell pairing was much stronger than inter-shell pairing. We measured high- missing-momentum protons knocked out in electron scattering from selected nuclei with a range of shell configurations, A, and N/Z, including 9Be, 10,11B, 12C, 40,48Ca, 54Fe, and 197Au, focusing on the four light nuclei. Unexpectedly, we found that adding one proton to 9Be (to make 10B) increased the number of correlated protons far more than adding one neutron to 10B or adding one proton to 11B, perhaps due to the large spin (J = 3) of 10B or the unusual structure of 9Be. In addition, the increase in pairing probability from 9Be to 12C and from 40Ca to 54Fe was much steeper than the increase from 9Be to 197Au. This shows the importance of low-momentum nuclear structure on the probability of high-momentum nucleon pairing.

Proton-Number Fluctuations in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.1$ GeV with the CEE Fast Simulation

The Cooling Storage Ring External-target Experiment (CEE) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) offers a unique opportunity to map the QCD phase diagram in the high-baryon-density region. In particular, higher-order cumulants ($C_r$) of event-by-event proton number distributions have been proposed as sensitive probes of the nuclear-matter phase structure. In this work, $^{\text{238}}$U+$^{\text{238}}$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.1$ GeV are generated using the JAM2 model and then processed through the CEE fast simulation with detector responses. Experimental analysis procedures, including centrality determination and particle identification, are also implemented. Proton-number cumulants up to fourth order and their ratios are calculated and compared with the true values. A track-by-track efficiency correction method is tested by introducing reconstruction efficiency within the TPC acceptance. An additional factor is also included to account for acceptance losses caused by the azimuthal gap between the two TPCs. Within the uncertainties of the current data sample, the corrected cumulants and cumulant ratios are consistent with their generator-level values. The event-sample dependence of the cumulant-ratio uncertainties is further investigated to estimate the statistics required for future measurements, revealing a substantial statistical cost associated with the acceptance compensation. These results provide a simulation-based assessment of the analysis feasibility and statistical requirements for proton-number fluctuation measurements at CEE.
