A new outburst in LMC-N66

Abstract

This is the first report on the new outburst presented by the central star of the LMC-N66 nebula. This object was classified as a planetary nebula, however, its true nature is under debate. In the period 1955-1990 the central star was almost undetectable and only nebular emission lines were observed. In 1990, the beginning of an outburst was detected and in few months it became much brighter and developed wide He and N lines, typical of a Wolf Rayet star of the N-sequence. The maximum occurred in 1994 and afterwards the star slowly faded. Analysis of its evolution showed that it has a variable mass-loss rate which occasionally increases enormously, creating a false photosphere at a much larger radius, making it appear a few magnitudes brighter. The present outburst has occurred 13 years after the episode from 1994 to 2000. So far this new event has similar characteristics although there are some significant differences in the spectral features. We present optical and FUSE spectra showing the main properties of this latter event.

Kinematic Control of the Inertiality of ICRS Catalogs

We perform a kinematic analysis of the Hipparcos and TRC proper motions of stars by using a linear Ogorodnikov-Milne model. All of the distant (r more than 0.2 kpc) stars of the Hipparcos catalog have been found to rotate around the Galactic y axis with an angular velocity of -0.36 +/- 0.09 mas/year. One of the causes of this rotation may be an uncertainty in the lunisolar precession constant adopted when constructing the ICRS. In this case? the correction to the IAU (1976) lunisolar precession constant in longitude is shown to be -3.26 +/- 0.10 mas/yr. Based on the TRC catalog, we have determined the main Oort constants: A = 14.9 +/- 1.0 and B = -10.8 +/- 0.3 km/s/kpc. The component of the model that describes the rotation of all TRC stars around the Galactic y axis is nonzero for all magnitudes, My= -0.86 +/- 0.11 mas/yr.

Astrometric Control of the Inertiality of the Hipparcos Catalog

Based on the most complete list of the results of an individual comparison of the proper motions for stars of various programs common to the Hipparcos catalog, each of which is an independent realization of the inertial reference frame with regard to stellar proper motions, we redetermined the vector $ω$ of residual rotation of the ICRS system relative to the extragalactic reference frame. The equatorial components of this vector were found to be the following: $ω_x = +0.04\pm 0.15$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $ω_y = +0.18\pm 0.12$ mas yr$^{-1}$, and $ω_z = -0.35\pm 0.09$ mas yr$^{-1}$.

The Interpretation of Inertial Force and The Existence of Absolute Background

The formalism of classical particle dynamics is reinvestigated according to the basic requirement of causal consistency, and a new equation of particle dynamics, which is more general and more in line with classical mechanics experiments than Newton's second law, is obtained. More importantly, the inertial frame of reference is no longer required and the inertial force is no longer introduced by hand. The new dynamical equation can be straightforwardly applied in any reference frame as long as which is irrotational with respect to the absolute background of the universe. The nature of the inertial force is nothing but the real forces acting on the reference object. The essence of this reform of classical particle dynamics is just a drawback of traditional formalism in Newtonian mechanics being corrected. However, it may be more important that a logical derivation of this new particle dynamics equation strongly suggests the existence of an absolute background for the whole space of the universe. In physical concepts, the absolute background for space does not conflict with the relative length of the base unit of space in Einstein's Special Relativity and General Relativity. Furthermore, the size of the base unit of space should essentially be understood as the length of the line segment, which is cut from the absolute background of space by the intrinsic physical events.
