A HST study of the environment of the Herbig Ae/Be star LkHa 233 and its bipolar jet

Abstract

We present the results of HST/STIS and WFPC2 observations of LkHa 233 and its environment. LkHa233 is a Herbig Ae/Be star with a collimated bipolar jet. We investigate optical forbidden lines along the LkHa 233 jet to determine physical parameters of this jet (electron density n_e, hydrogen ionisation fraction x_e, electron temperature T_e, and mass density n_H). The knowledge of these parameters allows us a direct comparison of a jet from a Herbig star with those from T Tauri stars. The WFPC2 images in broad-band filters clearly show a dark lane caused either by a circumstellar disk or a dust torus. In the blueshifted lobe, n_e is close to or above the critical density for [SII] lines (2.5x10^4 cm^-3) in the first arcsecond and decreases with distance from the source. The ionisation x_e~0.2-0.6 gently rises for the first 500 AU of the flow and shows two re-ionisation events further away from the origin. The T_e varies along the flow between 10^4 K and 3x10^4 K. The (radial) outflow velocities are ~ 80-160 km s^(-1), and they appear to increase with distance from the source. In the redshifted lobe, T_e, n_e, x_e, and n_H are all lower than in the blueshifted lobe, but have the same order of magnitude. All these derived parameters are just beyond or at the upper limits of those observed for classical T Tauri star jets. This may indicate that the flows from the higher mass Herbig stars are indeed scaled-up examples of the same phenomenon as in T Tauri stars.

Cosmic flow from 2MASS redshift survey: The origin of CMB dipole and implications for LCDM cosmology

We generate the peculiar velocity field for the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) catalog using an orbit-reconstruction algorithm. The reconstructed velocities of individual objects in 2MRS are well-correlated with the peculiar velocities obtained from high-precision observed distances within 3,000 km/s. We estimate the mean matter density to be 0.31 +/- 0.05 by comparing observed to reconstructed velocities in this volume. The reconstructed motion of the Local Group in the rest frame established by distances within 3,000 km/s agrees with the observed motion and is generated by fluctuations within this volume, in agreement with observations. Then, we reconstruct the velocity field of 2MRS in successively larger radii, to study the problem of convergence towards the CMB dipole. We find that less than half of the amplitude of the CMB dipole is generated within a volume enclosing the Hydra-Centaurus-Norma supercluster at around 40 Mpc/h. Although most of the amplitude of the CMB dipole seems to be recovered by 120 Mpc/h, the direction does not agree and hence we observe no convergence up to this scale. We develop a statistical model which allows us to estimate cosmological para meters from the reconstructed growth of convergence of the velocity of the Local Group towards the CMB dipole motion. For scales up to 60 Mpc/h, assuming a Local Group velocity of 627 km/s, we estimate Omega_m h^2 = 0.11 +/- 0.06 and sigma_8=0.9 +/- 0.4, in agreement with WMAP5 measurements at the 1-sigma level. However, for scales up to 100 Mpc/h, we obtain Omega_m h^2 = 0.08 +/- 0.03 and sigma_8=1.0 +/- 0.4, which agrees at the 1 to 2-sigma level with WMAP5 results. (abridged)

Hydrogen and Helium atoms in strong magnetic fields

The energy levels of hydrogen and helium atoms in strong magnetic fields are calculated in this study. The current work contains estimates of the binding energies of the first few low-lying states of these systems that are improvements upon previous estimates. The methodology involves computing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the generalized two-dimensional Hartree-Fock partial differential equations for these one- and two-electron systems in a self-consistent manner. The method described herein is applicable to calculations of atomic structure in magnetic fields of arbitrary strength as it exploits the natural symmetries of the problem without assumptions of any basis functions for expressing the wave functions of the electrons or the commonly employed adiabatic approximation. The method is found to be readily extendable to systems with more than two electrons.

Formation of Carbon Dwarfs

We consider the formation of dwarf carbon stars via accretion from a carbon AGB companion in light of the new 107 object sample of Downes et al. (2004). This sample is now large enough to allow good mass determination via comparison of a composite spectrum to theoretical atmospheric models. Carbon dwarfs of spectral type M are indeed main sequence M dwarfs with enhanced metallicity and carbon abundance. We also calculate the predicted abundance of both M and of F/G carbon dwarfs, and show that the latter should be falsifiable in the near future.
