The Form of the Effective Interaction in Harmonic-Oscillator-Based Effective Theory

Abstract

I explore the form of the effective interaction in harmonic-oscillator-based effective theory (HOBET) in next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). As the included space in a HOBET (as in the shell model) is defined by the oscillator energy, both long-distance (low-momentum) and short-distance (high-momentum) degrees of freedom reside in the high-energy excluded space. A HOBET effective interaction is developed in which a short-range contact-gradient expansion is combined with an exact summation of the relative kinetic energy. By this means the very strong coupling of the included (P) and excluded (Q) spaces by the kinetic energy is removed. One finds that the interplay of QT and QV is governed by a single parameter kappa, the ratio of an observable, the binding energy |E|, to a parameter in the effective theory, the oscillator energy. Once the functional dependence on kappa is identified, the remaining order-by-order subtraction of the short-range physics residing in Q becomes systematic and rapidly converging. Numerical calculations are used to demonstrate how well the resulting expansion reproduces the running of Heff from high scales to a typical shell-model scale of 8 hbar omega. At N3LO various global properties of Heff are reproduced to a typical accuracy of 0.01%, or about 1 keV. The state-dependence of the effective interaction has been a troubling problem in nuclear physics, and is embodied in the energy dependence of Heff(|E|) in the Bloch-Horowitz formalism. It is shown that almost all of this state dependence is also extracted in the procedures followed here, isolated in the analytic dependence of Heff on kappa. Thus there exists a simple, Hermitian Heff that can be use in spectral calculations.

Deformability of neutron-deficient Sn nuclei studied with semi-realistic interaction

Although Sn nuclei have long been considered typical spherical nuclei, the $E2$ transitions in neutron-deficient Sn nuclei have posed a puzzle. We argue that their deformability may resolve this issue, based on self-consistent calculations with a semi-realistic interaction. The significant role of the pseudo-spin symmetry, which is attributed to the effects of the tensor force, is also discussed.

Isospin-invariant Skyrme density functional investigation of quadrupole deformations in the isospin triplets of $\bf{A=70, 74}$ and $\bf{78}$

In this work, we perform self-consistent isospin-invariant Skyrme density functional calculations to investigate the ground-state properties of the isospin triplets with mass numbers $A=70$, $74$, and $78$. The present study is motivated by the reported anomaly between the observed quadrupole deformation and that expected from isospin symmetry. It is shown that the trend of the deduced $T_z$ dependence of $B(E2,2_1^+ \rightarrow 0_1^+)$ transition strengths from the charge quadrupole moments is consistent with the measured values for the $T_z=\pm 1$ members of the $A=70$ triplet. However, the calculated $B(E2,2_1^+ \rightarrow 0_1^+)$ rates for the $T_z=0$ members exceed the experimental transition rates in all the three studied triplets. Our study implies that non-linear dependence of the $B(E2,2_1^+ \rightarrow 0_1^+)$ transition strengths is expected in all of them and primarily arises from the observed suppressed transition rates for the $T_z=0$ members.

Heavy-quark thermalization in the quark-gluon plasma via a fractional Langevin equation

The dynamics of heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma is commonly described within a standard Langevin equation framework. In this work, we extend the conventional framework by using a fractional Langevin equation based on the Caputo derivative of order $α$ with $1<α\leq 2$. We solve the fractional Langevin equation and derive the corresponding {\textit {fractional fluctuation-dissipation theorem}} for the heavy quark thermalization in the quark-gluon plasma medium. We calculate the time evolution of the mean-squared momentum, mean-squared displacement, momentum distribution, energy loss, longitudinal momentum loss, transverse momentum broadening, and the nuclear suppression factor of the heavy quarks. The mean-squared momentum thermalizes to the same value for all $α$ at late times, in agreement with the fractional fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and the nuclear suppression factor shows a systematic $α$-dependence. The energy loss of an energetic heavy quark grows strongly with $α$. The time evolution of the heavy quark momentum distribution provides additional sensitivity to the fractional dynamics of the heavy quarks in the QGP medium.
