Manifolds with nonnegative isotropic curvature

Abstract

We prove that if $(M^n,g)$, $n \ge 4$, is a compact, orientable, locally irreducible Riemannian manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature, then one of the following possibilities hold: (i) $M$ admits a metric with positive isotropic curvature (ii) $(M,g)$ is isometric to a locally symmetric space (iii) $(M,g)$ is Kähler and biholomorphic to $\C P^\frac {n}{2}$. (iv) $(M,g)$ is quaternionic-Kähler. This is implied by the following result: Let $(M^{2n},g)$ be a compact, locally irreducible Kähler manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature. Then either $M$ is biholomorphic to $\C P^n$ or isometric to a compact Hermitian symmetric space. This answers a question of Micallef and Wang in the affirmative. The proof is based on the recent work of S. Brendle and R. Schoen on the Ricci flow.

Infinite rigidity of inversive distance circle packings in the Poincaré disk

The maximum principle for hyperbolic inversive distance circle packings on polyhedral surfaces is established, which unifies and generalizes existing maximum principles for various types of circle packings in the literature. As an application of this principle, a discrete Schwarz-Ahlfors lemma is established.Furthermore, an infinite rigidity theorem for weighted Delaunay triangulations of the Poincaré disk is proved, which generalizes He's hyperbolic rigidity result \cite{He2}.

Finite-Gap Solutions of the Pohlmeyer--Lund--Regge Equation and the Associated Lund-Regge Surfaces

We develop a finite-gap construction for the Pohlmeyer-Lund-Regge (PLR) equation and the associated Lund-Regge surfaces. From the hyperelliptic spectral data we build a Baker-Akhiezer function and an SU(2)-frame, yielding an explicit theta-quotient formula for the PLR solution. We then derive criteria for s-periodicity and t-periodicity: under the stated theta-period assumptions, s-periodicity and t-periodicity are each equivalent to a critical-point condition for the corresponding normalized differential together with a phase condition at the reconstruction point. This provides a PLR analogue of the periodicity mechanism of Calini-Ivey.

A problem for isolated singularities of surfaces

We study the extension of the conformal structure of a Riemann surface, obtained as a submanifold of $\mathbf R^n$, across an isolated singular point, under hypotheses that are metric rather than analytic. The main result (1989) is that an isolated singularity is $\textbf{conformally point-like}$ (conformal to a punctured disc) whenever it is $\textbf{$M$-regular}$: the pair (surface minus the point, the point) satisfies a Whitney condition, and the length of the spherical slice $S(0,r)\cap E$ decreases at most linearly in $r$, a condition described as ``metric decay''. This is proved via a modulus-of-rings (extremal-length) argument, generalizing the classical planar technique to submanifolds of $\mathbf R^n$. Two classes of examples are treated: surfaces of revolution generated by a single curve, and subanalytic surfaces, for which $M$-regularity is verified directly from Hironaka's structure theory, giving as a corollary that every isolated singularity of an orientable subanalytic surface is conformally point-like. A further original result is a $C^\infty$ counterexample showing that a strict Whitney condition alone does $\textbf{not}$ imply the linear length bound: the two hypotheses in the definition of $M$-regularity are independent.
