Explicit computations of all finite index bimodules for a family of II_1 factors

Abstract

We study II_1 factors M and N associated with good generalized Bernoulli actions of groups having an infinite almost normal subgroup with the relative property (T). We prove the following rigidity result: every finite index M-N-bimodule (in particular, every isomorphism between M and N) is described by a commensurability of the groups involved and a commensurability of their actions. The fusion algebra of finite index M-M-bimodules is identified with an extended Hecke fusion algebra, providing the first explicit computations of the fusion algebra of a II_1 factor. We obtain in particular explicit examples of II_1 factors with trivial fusion algebra, i.e. only having trivial finite index subfactors.

Skew fields of non-commutative meromorphic functions affiliated to finite operator algebras

We embed skew fields of meromorphic functions in several non-commuting variables into the topological $*-$algebra of closed linear operators affiliated to a finite von Neumann algebra, $\mathfrak{M}$, with faithful, normal tracial state, $τ$. Namely, let $\mathscr{O} _d (r)$, $r \in (0, +\infty]$, denote the rings of formal power series in $d \in \mathbb{N}$ non-commuting variables with "radius of convergence" at least $r$ and let $Ξ\in \mathfrak{M} ^{1\times d}$ be a tuple of row-norm $<r$ with the property that there exist no non-zero trace-class operators $T_1, \cdots, T_d \in \mathscr{B} (L^2 (\mathfrak{M}, τ))$ obeying $\sum _j [T_j , Ξ_j] =0$. Then the unital homomorphism $\mathscr{O} _d (r) \rightarrow \mathfrak{M}$ defined by the evaluation, $\mathfrak{z} _j \mapsto Ξ_j$, extends to an embedding of the universal skew field of fractions of $\mathscr{O} _d (r)$ into the $*-$algebra of closed operators affiliated to $\mathfrak{M}$. In their $L^2-$homology theory of von Neumann algebras, Connes and Shlyakhtenko defined a certain quantity, $0 \leq Δ(Ξ) \leq d$, as the Murray-von Neumann co-dimension of the Hilbert module generated by all $d-$tuples of finite rank operators obeying the above commutator condition with $Ξ\in \mathfrak{M} ^{1\times d}$. As demonstrated by Mai, Speicher and Yin, this $Δ$ measures, in a certain precise sense, the algebraic independence of the components of $Ξ$. Connes-Shlyakhtenko proved that $Δ$ is an upper bound for Voiculescu's non-microstates free entropy dimension, $δ^* (Ξ)$, and remark that it is of interest to determine whether these two quantities are equal. Using non-commutative function theory, we show that this is generally not the case, by constructing a triple of self-adjoint operators, $Ξ= (Ξ_1,Ξ_2,Ξ_3)$, for which this inequality is strict, $δ^*(Ξ) < Δ(Ξ)$.

On the $ω$-circular $*$-distribution for complex unimodular $ω$

We consider a notion of $ω$-circular $*$-distribution $μ_ω$, defined in terms of a parameter $ω\in \mathbb{C}$ with $| ω|=1$. This $*$-distribution appears as limit law in an algebraic central limit theorem (CLT) for $ω$-commuting unitaries, and interpolates between the Fermionic setting (at $ω= -1$) and the Bosonic one (at $ω= 1$). On a combinatorial level, $μ_ω$ is described in terms of pair-partitions of sets $\{1, ... ,2n\}$, where one has a total order among the $n$ pairs of the partition and where every pair is assigned a direction, to the effect that one can define the sign of a crossing between two pairs. The main goal of the paper is to study a significant subspace, with "Fock space" flavour, of the $L^2$-space associated to a natural multi-variate version of $μ_ω$. The inner product on this subspace is defined by a sesquilinear form $\langle \cdot \, , \, \cdot \rangle_ω$ on non-commutative polynomials. We explicitly describe $\langle \cdot \, , \, \cdot \rangle_ω$ in terms of some tractable non-negative definite functions on symmetric groups, and we prove that it is non-degenerate if and only if $ω$ is not a root of unity.

Anomalies for compact simple Lie groups via $G$-kernels for loop group nets

Let $G$ be a compact simply connected simple Lie group and $k \geq 1$. Jump loops give an outer homomorphism $θ_k$ from $G$ to the outer automorphisms of the local factor of the level-$k$ loop group net, which is the hyperfinite type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor. We show that its Sutherland obstruction is $k$ times the positive basic class in $H^3_{\mathrm{Borel}}(G, \mathbb{T}) \cong H^{4}(BG, \mathbb{Z})$ and that $θ_k$ is faithful, so it is a $G$-kernel. Central elements act by the outer automorphisms of the simple currents. In types A, D, E the level-one class is computed by comparing maximal-torus jump loops with the lattice $α$-induction construction of the companion paper on both current and charged generators, followed by integral degree-four Cartan restriction. Higher levels follow by tensor additivity, and the remaining types by restriction along index-one embeddings into simply laced groups. As a consequence, for every compact simply connected semisimple $G$, every class in $H^4(BG, \mathbb{Z})$ is the obstruction of a $G$-kernel on the hyperfinite type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor.
