Ubiquity and a general logarithm law for geodesics

Abstract

There are two fundamental results in the classical theory of metric Diophantine approximation: Khintchine's theorem and Jarnik's theorem. The former relates the size of the set of well approximable numbers, expressed in terms of Lebesgue measure, to the behavior of a certain volume sum. The latter is a Hausdorff measure version of the former. We start by discussing these theorems and show that they are both in fact a simple consequence of the notion of `local ubiquity'. The local ubiquity framework introduced here is a much simplified and more transparent version of that in \cite{memoirs}. Furthermore, it leads to a single local ubiquity theorem that unifies the Lebesgue and Hausdorff theories. As an application of our framework we consider the theory of metric Diophantine approximation on limit sets of Kleinian groups. In particular, we obtain a general Hausdorff measure version of Sullivan's logarithm law for geodesics -- an aspect overlooked in \cite{memoirs}.

Pseudodifferential arithmetic, Riemann and Lindelöf hypotheses

The Weyl symbolic calculus of operators leads to the construction, if one takes for symbol a certain distribution decomposing over the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, of an operator with the following property: the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the validity of a collection of estimates involving this operator. Pseudodifferential arithmetic, a novel chapter of pseudodifferential operator theory, makes it possible to make the operator under study fully explicit. This leads to a disproof of the conjecture: zeros accumulate on the boundary of the critical strip. A similar method leads to a proof of the Lindel\öf hypothesis.

Extensions of locally analytic generalized Steinberg representations

Let $L$ be a finite extension of $\mathrm{Q}_p$. We study locally $\mathrm{Q}_p$-analytic generalized Steinberg representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(L)$ associated with a general Zelevinsky segment and compute certain $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-groups involving these representations. These extension groups give rise to parabolic Breuil simple $\mathcal{L}$-invariants on the automorphic side of a conjectural $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for potentially semistable $p$-adic Galois representations in the non-trianguline case.

Non-vanishing for cubic Hecke $L$-functions

Let $ω$ be a primitive cubic root of unity. We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(ω)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $χ_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[ω]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was known (even over function fields) prior to the writing of this paper. Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $χ\pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.
