Exponentially Stable Nonlinear Systems have Polynomial Lyapunov Functions on Bounded Regions

Abstract

This paper presents a proof that existence of a polynomial Lyapunov function is necessary and sufficient for exponential stability of sufficiently smooth nonlinear ordinary differential equations on bounded sets. The main result states that if there exists an n-times continuously differentiable Lyapunov function which proves exponential stability on a bounded subset of R^n, then there exists a polynomial Lyapunov function which proves exponential stability on the same region. Such a continuous Lyapunov function will exist if, for example, the right-hand side of the differential equation is polynomial or at least n-times continuously differentiable. The proof is based on a generalization of the Weierstrass approximation theorem to differentiable functions in several variables. Specifically, we show how to use polynomials to approximate a differentiable function in the Sobolev norm W^{1,\infty} to any desired accuracy. We combine this approximation result with the second-order Taylor series expansion to find that polynomial Lyapunov functions can approximate continuous Lyapunov functions arbitrarily well on bounded sets. Our investigation is motivated by the use of polynomial optimization algorithms to construct polynomial Lyapunov functions.

Jackson and Bernstein Inequalities with Explicit Weight Dependence for Band-Limited Wavelet Approximation in Weighted Besov Spaces

We prove direct and inverse estimates for band-limited biorthogonal wavelet systems in weighted Besov spaces with Muckenhoupt weights. On functions recovered from their wavelet expansion along the dyadic tree of the unit cube, the error of approximation by a prescribed number of terms decays at a rate set by the smoothness-to-dimension ratio, and this exponent cannot be increased. Under a multiresolution condition, Bernstein inequalities hold at a single scale and on every multiresolution subspace, and the linear approximation spaces are identified with weighted Lebesgue--Besov intersections. All constants are explicit; the weight enters only through displayed powers of the Muckenhoupt characteristic.

Weak type $(1,1)$ bounds for rough oscillatory singular integrals

In their seminal work, F. Ricci and E. M. Stein [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 83, 1--3 (1986)] introduced the oscillatory singular integral \[ T_Pf(x)=\mathrm{p.v.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} e^{iP(x,y)}\frac{Ω(x-y)}{|x-y|^n}f(y)\,dy, \] and S. Chanillo and M. Christ [Duke Math. J. 55, 141--155 (1987)] established its weak-type $(1,1)$ inequality for smooth $Ω$. For the rough variant, however, the weak-type $(1,1)$ inequality remained a long-standing open question. In the present paper, we settle this problem: specifically, we prove that the rough oscillatory singular integral is of weak type $(1,1)$ with $Ω\in L\log^+L(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$. Moreover, we establish weak-type $(1,1)$ bounds for the rough maximal oscillatory operator associated with $T_P$, a result of independent interest.

Restriction estimates using multilinear Kakeya

We use multilinear Kakeya estimates to establish restriction estimates in higher dimensions. For sufficiently large dimensions, our approach yields better exponents than those obtained by a direct application of polynomial partitioning.
