Multi-Hamiltonian structure for the finite defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik equation

Abstract

We study the Poisson structure associated to the defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik equation from a functional-analytical point of view, by reexpressing the Poisson bracket in terms of the associated Caratheodory function. Using this expression, we are able to introduce a family of compatible Poisson brackets which form a multi-Hamiltonian structure for the Ablowitz-Ladik equation. Furthermore, we show using some of these new Poisson brackets that the Geronimus relations between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and those on the interval define an algebraic and symplectic mapping between the Ablowitz-Ladik and Toda hierarchies.

Birational Weyl group actions and q-Painleve equations via mutation combinatorics in cluster algebras

A cluster algebra is an algebraic structure generated by operations of a quiver (a directed graph) called the mutations and their associated simple birational mappings. By using a graph-combinatorial approach, we present a systematic way to derive a tropical, i.e. subtraction-free birational, representation of Weyl groups from cluster algebras. Our results provide an extensive class of Weyl group actions, including previously known examples with algebro-geometric background, and hence are relevant to the q-Painleve equations and their higher-order extensions. Key ingredients of the argument are the combinatorial aspects of the reflection associated with a cycle subgraph in the quiver. We also study symplectic structures of the discrete dynamical systems thus obtained. The normal form of a skew-symmetric integer matrix allows us to choose Darboux coordinates while preserving the birationality.

Lax Pairs: Integrable, Less Integrable and Nonintegrable Systems

Completely integrable finite dimensional Hamiltonian systems are well understood thanks to the work of Liouville and Arnold. On the other hand, the Lax Pair formulation of the KdV equation marks the beginning of the extension of the completely integrable theory to infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Solutions of initial value problems for systems that admit a Lax Pair formulation normally have a tame qualitative behavior if Lax Pairs give rise to an infinite complete set of conserved laws. The situation is different for initial-boundary value problems, even in one space dimension. There are problems where integrability persists and regular (long time asymptotic) behavior can be proven (and we have proven it). There are others where even irregular "fractal-chaotic-looking" behavior can appear. In this short article we review an instance of each case. We also make a connection with results from the existing theory of perturbed Lax Pair equations on the real line.

Fredholm determinant solutions to the modified KP hierarchy and 2D Toda lattice: isospectral and non-isospectral reductions

We study Fredholm determinant solutions to the first two positive and the first negative members of the modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) hierarchy, together with the bilinear two-dimensional Toda lattice (2DTL) equation. By applying isospectral reductions, we explicitly construct Fredholm determinant solutions for the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), the modified Camassa-Holm, and the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the non-isospectral case, the reduction from the mKP and 2DTL equations to the non-isospectral negative KdV equation yields solutions characterized by the deformed Bessel determinant.
