Pseudo-Gaussian quantum models

Abstract

A new family of one-dimensional quantum models is proposed in terms of new potentials with a Gaussian asymptotic behavior but approaching to the potential of the harmonic o scillator when $x\to 0$. It is shown that, in the energy basis of the harmonic oscillator, the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian operators of these new models can be derived from generating functionals.

Electrostatics as a Stress Theory in $\mathbb R^3$ : Free and Bound Charge, Gauge Invariance, and Mechanical Interactions

We formulate electrostatics in \rthree as the simplest instance of the theory of stresses: the virtual velocity field of continuum mechanics is simply replaced by a scalar potential field. A charge distribution is then a linear functional on potential fields whose value is the potential energy, and it is represented by a volume charge density and by surface charge densities on the boundaries of subbodies. Cauchy's theorem gives a vector field $\boldsymbol P$, the analog of the traction stress, and a scalar field $r$, so that the energy is $\int(rφ+\boldsymbol P\cdot\nablaφ)dV$. The pair $(r,\boldsymbol P)$, the analog of a variational stress, splits every charge distribution uniquely into free charge, with density $r$, and a dipole distribution, with density $\boldsymbol P$, which carries the bound charges $-\nabla\cdot\boldsymbol P$ and $\boldsymbol P\cdot\boldsymbolν$; the fields $r$ and $\boldsymbol P$ are the densities of charge and of dipole moment. We do not impose gauge invariance of the energy. Instead, we show that it is the analog of the balance of forces on every subbody, and that it singles out the neutral charge distributions. For charges embedded in matter, the forces exerted by the electric field are derived. They are shown to be gauge invariant for every charge distribution, and they include an asymmetric active stress $\boldsymbol E\boldsymbol\otimes\boldsymbol P$ whose skew-symmetric part is the couple density $\boldsymbol P\times\boldsymbol E$.

Localization near the edge for the lattice Anderson-Bernoulli model on general dimension

The Anderson tight-binding model is a fundamental model of quantum transport and localization in disordered media. Solving a problem left open by Bourgain and Kenig, this paper proves Anderson localization near the bottom of the spectrum for the lattice Anderson model with Bernoulli potential, in any dimension $d\ge 2$. The proof uses the multiscale framework of Fröhlich-Spencer and Bourgain-Kenig, and the main new ingredient is a probabilistic discrete unique continuation principle (PDUC) for the discrete Schrödinger equation. This PDUC is established via a bootstrap argument and a key probabilistic lemma proved by adaptively revealing the random potential.

Dipole Formation in the Two-Component Plasma

We consider the two-dimensional two-component plasma, or Coulomb gas, consisting of $N$ positive and $N$ negative charges with logarithmic interaction. We introduce a suitable regularization of the interaction by smearing the charges over a small length scale $λ$, which allows us to give meaning to the system in the continuum at any temperature. We provide an expansion of the free energy for each inverse temperature $β\ge2$, as $N \to \infty$ and $λ\to 0$. Doing so allows us to show that, for $β\geq 2$, the charges (for the most part) pair into neutral dipoles of very small size as $λ\to 0$. This complements the prior work of Leblé, Zeitouni, and the second author, which proved that this does not happen for $β< 2$, thereby implying a transition at $β= 2$ from free charges to dipole pairs. Moreover, we obtain an estimate on the size of linear statistics. The description in terms of dipoles is made via a decomposition into nearest-neighbor graphs of the point configurations, à la Gunson-Panta. This is combined with new energy estimates obtained via an electric reformulation of the interaction energy and a ball-growth method, which are expressed in terms of the nearest-neighbor graph distances only. In this way, the model is compared to a reduced nearest-neighbor interaction model, by showing the relative smallness of the dipole-dipole interactions.
