Resurgent functions and splitting problems

Abstract

The present text is an introduction to Écalle's theory of resurgent functions and alien calculus, in connection with problems of exponentially small separatrix splitting. An outline of the resurgent treatment of Abel's equation for resonant dynamics in one complex variable is included. The emphasis is on examples of nonlinear difference equations, as a simple and natural way of introducing the concepts.

Billiards and Hofer's Geometry

We present a link between billiards in convex plane domains and Hofer's geometry, an area of symplectic topology. For smooth strictly convex billiard tables, we prove that the Hofer distance between the corresponding billiard ball maps admits an upper bound in terms of a simple geometric distance between the tables. We use this result to show that the billiard ball map of a convex polygon lies in the completion, with respect to Hofer's metric, of the group of smooth area-preserving maps of the annulus. Finally, we discuss related connections to dynamics and pose several open problems.

Characterization of spatial topological chaos for bistable lattice equation

In this paper we extend the description of spatial topological chaos for bistable lattice equations in a small diffusion regime. We generalize the Keener's proof and show that stationary solutions are topologically conjugate to biinfinite sequences on a three-symbol alphabet. We provide a priori estimates for the values of stationary solutions and use them to show that there are exactly two monotone stationary fronts (up to a translation). Finally, we apply the localization of all stationary solutions to characterize their stability and get the existence of unique stable and unstable monotone fronts (up to a translation).

Finiteness of planar central configurations of five bodies for all positive masses: On Smale's sixth problem

We prove that for every choice of five positive masses the planar five-body problem has only finitely many central configurations up to rotation, translation and scaling. This answers Smale's sixth problem for five bodies. Albouy and Kaloshin proved the statement for all masses outside a closed algebraic subset of codimension two of the mass space. We keep their classification of singular sequences and replace the construction of the exceptional set by a direct exclusion: we use finite boundary charts for seven of the eight diagrams that can carry an unbounded four-product, and an exhaustive order census for Diagram 5. We derive the necessary mass conditions where needed and show that no germ with an unbounded four-product lies on a curve of normalized central configurations through a positive configuration. Five diagrams are excluded for all complex germs, two on curves through real configurations, and one on curves through positive configurations. Parts of the argument are computer-assisted: exact algebra, interval arithmetic and exact linear programming.
