Infinitesimal cubical structure, and higher connections

Abstract

In the context of Synthetic Differential Geometry, we describe a notion of higher connection with values in a cubical groupoid. We do this by exploiting a certain structure of cubical complex derived from the first neighbourhood of the diagonal of a manifold. This cubical complex consists of infinitesimal parallelelpipeda.

Cospan contexts and higher categories

Motivated by the desire to turn the cobordism hypothesis (a statement about the universal property of some $n$-category of bordisms) into a $1$-categorical statement, we prove that all $n$-categories can be modeled by \emph{$n$-cospan contexts}: these are $1$-categories equipped with a collection of iterated cospans that satisfy a composition property in terms of pushouts. In particular, we construct an adjunction from $\mathsf{Cat}_n$ to the category of $n$-cospan contexts which simultaneously generalizes the $n$-fold span construction of Haugseng and the twisted arrow category construction (when $n = 1$).

Partial actions of inverse categories and their algebras

In this work we introduce partial and global actions of inverse categories on posets in two variants, fibred actions and actions by symmetries. We study in detail actions of an inverse category $\mathcal{C}$ on specific subposets of the poset of finite subsets of $\mathcal{C}$, the Bernoulli actions. We show that to each fibred action of an inverse category on a poset there corresponds another inverse category, the semidirect product associated to the action. The Bernoulli actions give rise to the Szendrei expansions of $\mathcal{C}$, which define an endofunctor of the category of inverse categories. We extend the concept of ''enlargement'' from inverse semigroup theory to inverse categories, and we show that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their Cauchy completions are equivalent categories; in particular, some pairs corresponding to partial and global Bernoulli actions are enlargements. We conclude by studying convolution algebras of finite inverse categories and showing that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their convolution algebras are Morita equivalent. Furthermore, using Kan extensions we also analyze the infinite case.

The compact double category $\mathbf{Int}(\mathbf{Poly}_*)$ models control flow and data transformations

Hasegawa showed that control flow in programming languages---while loops and if-then-else statements---can be modeled using traced cocartesian categories, such as the category Set_* of pointed sets. In this paper we define an operad W of wiring diagrams that provides syntax for categories whose control flow moreover includes data transformations, including deleting, duplicating, permuting, and applying pre-specified functions to variables. In the most basic version, the operad underlies Int(Poly_*), where Int(T) denotes the free compact category on a traced category T, as defined by Joyal, Street, and Verity; to do so, we show that Poly_*, as well as any multivariate version of it, is traced. We show moreover that whenever T is uniform---a condition also defined by Hasegawa and satisfied by Poly_*---the resulting Int-construction extends to a double category IInt(T), which is compact in the sense of Patterson. Finally, we construct an operational structure on the double categories IInt(Poly_*) and IInt(Set_*) by which one can track trajectories as they move through the control flow associated to a wiring diagram, and we prove that the resulting operational semantics is computationally adequate, in the sense of Plotkin, for the denotational semantics in which a filled wiring diagram evaluates to a partial function.
