The spectrum of Schrödinger operators and Hodge Laplacians on conformally cusp manifolds

Abstract

We describe the spectrum of the $k$-form Laplacian on conformally cusp Riemannian manifolds. The essential spectrum is shown to vanish precisely when the $k$ and $k-1$ de Rham cohomology groups of the boundary vanish. We give Weyl-type asymptotics for the eigenvalue-counting function in the purely discrete case. In the other case we analyze the essential spectrum via positive commutator methods and establish a limiting absorption principle. This implies the absence of the singular spectrum for a wide class of metrics. We also exhibit a class of potentials $V$ such that the Schrödinger operator has compact resolvent, although $V$ tends to $-\infty$ in most of the infinity. We correct a statement from the literature regarding the essential spectrum of the Laplacian on forms on hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume, and we propose a conjecture about the existence of such manifolds in dimension four whose cusps are rational homology spheres.

Spectrum of the wave equation with Dirac damping on a compact star graph

We consider the wave equation with a distributional Dirac damping and Dirichlet boundary conditions on a compact interval. It is shown that the spectrum of the corresponding wave operator is fully determined by zeroes of an entire function. Consequently, a considerable change of spectral properties is shown for certain critical values of the damping parameter. We also derive a definitive criterion for the Riesz basis property of the root vectors for an arbitrary placement of a complex-valued Dirac damping. Finally, we consider a generalisation of the problem for compact star graphs and provide insight into the essence of the critical damping constant.

Quantitative Pólya inequalities for annular sectors

We prove explicit positive corrections to the Dirichlet and Neumann Pólya inequalities at every positive eigenvalue index of every annular sector. The coefficients depend only on the radii and are uniform in the aperture. Real-order angular integration preserves the exact area term, while directional rounding estimates and radial trials control all frequencies. Optimized bounds attain the sharp circular-arc coefficient for the continuous count. We identify the full sector perimeter asymptotic and a low-index obstruction to using its coefficient throughout the spectrum. The strict Neumann inequality also passes to products with bounded Lipschitz domains.

Efimov effect in an internal spectral gap of a three-particle lattice Hamiltonian

We prove the existence of an Efimov sequence in an internal gap of the essential spectrum of a three-particle lattice Hamiltonian. The system consists of two identical spinless fermions and one distinguishable particle on \(\Z^3\), with repulsive pair interactions. For each fixed fermion-to-third-particle mass ratio \(γ>γ_*\approx13.6069657\) and total quasi-momentum near \(π\mathbf1\), the mixed zero-range coupling is tuned to a simultaneous upper-threshold resonance. Sufficiently strong nearest-neighbour repulsion between the fermions separates the upper fermion-pair two-cluster spectrum from the free three-particle band. Infinitely many discrete eigenvalues accumulate at the lower endpoint of the resulting gap, which coincides with the free upper edge. We establish logarithmic eigenvalue-counting asymptotics with the same positive coefficient as at zero fermion--fermion coupling. This coefficient also governs accumulation above the essential spectrum throughout the closed weak-coupling interval, including its critical endpoint. We classify the channel spectrum near the free upper edge for all nonnegative fermion couplings.
