A rigidity theorem for the mapping class group action on the space of unmeasured foliations on a surface

Abstract

Let $S$ be a surface of finite type which is not a sphere with at most four punctures, a torus with at most two punctures, or a closed surface of genus two. Let $\mathcal{MF}$ be the space of equivalence classes of measured foliations of compact support on $S$ and let $\mathcal{UMF}$ be the quotient space of $\mathcal{MF}$ obtained by identifying two equivalence classes whenever they can be represented by topologically equivalent foliations, that is, forgetting the transverse measure. The extended mapping class group $Γ^*$ of $S$ acts as by homeomorphisms of $\mathcal{UMF}$. We show that the restriction of the action of the whole homeomorphism group of $\mathcal{UMF}$ on some dense subset of $\mathcal{UMF}$ coincides with the action of $Γ^*$ on that subset. More precisely, let $\mathcal{D}$ be the natural image in $\mathcal{UMF}$ of the set of homotopy classes of not necessarily connected essential disjoint and pairwise nonhomotopic simple closed curves on $S$. The set $\mathcal{D}$ is dense in $\mathcal{UMF}$, it is invariant by the action of $Γ^*$ on $\mathcal{UMF}$ and the restriction of the action of $Γ^*$ on $\mathcal{D}$ is faithful. We prove that the restriction of the action on $\mathcal{D}$ of the group $\mathrm{Homeo}(\mathcal{UMF})$ coincides with the action of $Γ^*(S)$ on that subspace.

Non-planar contact structures with Calabi-Yau Fillings and topological quantum computation

This paper is a non-planar counterpart of the author's earlier work on planar contact structures and topological quantum computation. On a planar page every branch point is paired by a liftable arc, and the pairing matches the Ising representation exactly, in that fixing the channels of the pairs already fixes the state. Here the page has genus g and connected binding, presented as a simple degree-three cover of the disk. Every maximal system of disjoint liftable arcs then has exactly g members and leaves two branch points unused, and the half-twist interchanging the two points is not liftable, although its cube is and lifts to the identity. Ising fusion does not see that leftover pair, determining its channel from the other g and acting there only by scalars, whereas Fibonacci fusion can leave the channel undetermined. The powers of the cube then act by ten distinct relative phases on a single joint eigenspace, while the Calabi-Yau Stein filling stays fixed. An integral residue criterion supplies the Calabi-Yau test, a factorization localized on a contact connected sum is automatically Calabi-Yau, and, unlike in the planar case, a Calabi-Yau factorization need not be the shortest.

U torsion structure in Heegaard Floer homology

We construct infinite families of Brieskorn spheres with three singular fibers for which the difference between the largest and the second largest length of U-torsion in their Heegaard Floer homology $HF^-$ increases to infinity as the family parameter increases. In particular, these families give a negative answer to the strong geography restriction on rational homology spheres. As an application, these families give the examples of integer homology spheres that are neither surgery on a knot nor large surgery on links.
