Computing the core of ideals in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract

Let $R$ be a local Gorenstein ring with infinite residue field of arbitrary characteristic. Let $I$ be an $R$--ideal with $g=\height I >0$, analytic spread $\ell$, and let $J$ be a minimal reduction of $I$. We further assume that $I$ satisfies $G_{\ell}$ and ${\depth} R/I^j \geq \dim R/I -j+1$ for $1 \leq j \leq \ell-g$. The question we are interested in is whether $\core{I}=J^{n+1}:\ds \sum_{b \in I} (J,b)^n$ for $n \gg 0$. In the case of analytic spread one Polini and Ulrich show that this is true with even weaker assumptions (\cite[Theorem 3.4]{PU}). We give a negative answer to this question for higher analytic spreads and suggest a formula for the core of such ideals.

On Hankel Determinantal Matroids

We initiate a study of the algebraic matroid associated to the ideal generated by the $(r+1)$-minors of a Hankel matrix of variables. We prove that this matroid is uniform, that is, a coordinate projection from the corresponding Hankel determinantal variety is generically finite if and only if it preserves at least $2r$ anti-diagonals. For such projections, we establish bounds on the degree. These results are of significance to the problem of Hankel low-rank matrix completion.

On the Rees, Dilworth and Matsumura number

In this paper we study three numerical invariants of local rings: the Rees number, the Dilworth number, and the Matsumura number. These quantities measure, respectively, the minimal lengths of certain cyclic modules, the maximal numbers of generators of ideals, and a parameter-based analogue in higher dimension. We construct a non-exact local complete-intersection ring over $\mathbb{F}_2$, thereby providing a negative answer to a question of Matsumura on the exactness of zero-dimensional complete intersections. We also present a family of artinian Gorenstein local rings over a field of characteristic zero that are exact, making progress on a question of Watanabe. Finally, answering a further question of Matsumura, we introduce and study the Matsumura number and the class of homologically exact rings, which extend the notion of exactness beyond the one-dimensional case.
